(OUTscene NW) SLGFF 2013 Wrap Up: The Best, Good, Average, and Zero Awful!

by MK Scott

Now that the 2013 Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is over I could now reveal my Picks for the Best, Good, Average, and (Not) Awful films coming to a Film Fest, Theater or DVD in the coming year.

BEST

I am DiVine (Pictured)
Jeffery Schwartz'(Vito) much anticipated doc on Divine is Super Entertaining!

The Falls 2:Testament
Jon Garcia's Sequel to last year's The Falls is once again Greatly written and acted. More Sex scenes and is better after you see part one first.

Birthday Cake-
All Star Cast plus the Writer/Director, Chad Darnell is Brilliant and has a nice Modern Family Mockamentary style; Simply Brilliant!

Big Joy (See SIFF Review)

Shorts
Spooners  (Won Best short at SIFF and at SLGFF)
Alaska is a Drag, (a Tale of Flash and glitz and guts. Loved it!)

GOOD

Southern Baptist Sissies (Pictured)
Del Shores' New Play filmed on stage has an all star cast with Leslie Jordan giving the performance of his career, plus each actor is able to shine. Willam Belli sings and the audience feels the emotion. This is a Classic!

Stranger by the Lake
Intriguing French Thriller set at a nude Beach and lots of real sex. Despite the typical french ending, this will have you at the edge of your seat.

Moms Mabley
Whoopi Goldberg's love letter to Moms, who broke ground of being the the first Black, female, Gay comedian. She set the standard. That is much of the focus, rather than Bio.

Continental
The Birthplace of the modern Day Bath House and Disco, all started by an aspiring opera star, who needed a distraction. A Classic!

Raid of the Rainbow Lounge
Robert Camina's doc on how the Gay Liberation finally came to Ft. Worth, Texas, 40 years after Stonewall. This doc started out too Bias, but once the straight allies came out, the story and the viewpoint change was inevitable.

Test (See SIFF Review)

G.B.F. (See SIFF Review)

Geography Club (See SIFF Review)

Bruno and Earlene Go to Vegas
Thelma and Louise meets Too Wong Foo. A brother and sister bond between 2 misfits with lots of secrets end up in a ghost town of Misfits and change lives. All before they arrive in Vegas. A sleepy but charming Classic.

SHORTS:
On the nature of Hotness (Seattle Based with an appearance by Porn star, Zack Randall)
Deflated (A bit of Color is all you need)
House broken (Bisexual Romp)
Summer Vacation (Bring your Gay Lover on your Family vacation creates problems)

AVERAGE

Getting Go: The Go Doc Project
Edgy Homage to Andy Warhol with cheap images, would have preferred a 'Sex, Lies and Videotape' story, rather than documentary style. Seeing Tanner Cohen (We the World Mine) act a little dirty was worth seeing. Especially his nude scenes!

The Happy Sad
Rodney Evans (Brother to Brother) once again mixes diversity as white straight couple come to terms about  whether or not if they will be a Poly couple. The Plot was a little confusing.

Big Gay Love (Pictured)
The Man behind the Brilliance of 'Gayby', Jonathan Lisecki, gets top billing as a Husky gay man, who is filled with so much self hate it is hard to cheer him on. Now, if Lisecki wrote or directed, it could have had heart.

I always said Yes: Wakefield Poole
Broadway Dancer turned porn king turned chef and survivor. That's It.

SHORT:

Julian
More Documentary and this was a Boy short. I still don't know who Julian is!

Not Awful/ Not Bad/Not Average/Not Good

Bijou (Pictured)
Wakefield Poole's 1972 porno of a straight construction worker with a 12incher goes to a Bath House to meet some ladies and ends up Fucking and fucked with dudes. No Dialouge in the style of 80's Gay Porn. I was expecting, actual acting like with any firm starring 70's King of Porn, Wrangler. I would have loved to have the seen the more successful 1971's Boys in the Sand.

Biggest Trends: Hairy Asses, Full Frontal, Mock/Documentary style,
