(EDDIE's VIEW) RECAP: Rupaul's Drag Race - Season 5 - Episode 2 !‏

By Eddie Walker

This week’s RuPaul’s Drag Race had the girls lip-syncing for their life for the entire episode. For the mini challenge, the girls had to lip-sync to RuPaul’s songs (Tranny Chaser, Lady Boy, and Peanut Butter) with only their mouths visible. RuPaul named Serena ChaCha, Detox, and Ivy Winters the winners of the mini-challenge.

For the main challenge, the girls had to lip-sync to spoken word by recreating some of our favorite moments from Drag Race episodes of seasons passed. The girls were broken up into three competing teams, with the winners from the mini-challenge being named the captains of each team.

The judges declared ‘Team - Ivy Winters’ the winners of the main challenge, and named Lineysha Sparx the ‘best in group’ which she totally deserved for her performance as Tyra. However, I think Alyssa Edwards out lip-synced them all with here rendition of Shangella. The judges definitely spoke the truth when they said Alyssa played Shangella better than Shangella could. Alyssa gave us the right body language, the right dramatic facial expressions, and a flawless lip-sync. If her team captain, Serena ChaCha, wouldn’t have given us the worst lip -sync of all the girls, I’m sure Alyssa Edwards would have been named the winner.

For the runway challenge, the girls gave us our first look at their personal styles wearing their own garments. And I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw…for the most part. Almost all of the girls sent down ‘passable to impressive’ looks down the runway. Alyssa Edwards and Detox wore my favorite looks of the night. Alyssa Edwards worked a Cruella Deville look that is always fashionable, while Detox served Angelica Huston realness. I liked Alyssa and Detox from the very beginning for their bone structure alone. And because of the fact that they both have an elevated taste level above the other girls, I’m going to have to choose them as my picks for the top two spots in the final three.

The third spot will likely be taken by Lineysha Sparx, Roxxy Andrews, or, do I dare say, Alaska. I might have judged Alaska a little too harshly too soon; she might end up being a contender after all. She tied for my third favorite runway look with Lineysha Sparxx. We’ll see if she delivers consistently as the season progresses.

Four of the looks received constructive criticism. Although I raved about Roxxy Andrews in the first episode, she fell flat in this one. Santino stated, with her brown makeup coloring and brown Vegas show-girl outfit, she looked like Chewbacca in drag. And all I can say is, “I agree.” The judges called Jinkx Monsoon out for having a dry wig. I would have called her out for wearing a boring silver space age gown also, but that’s just me.

Serena ChaCha wore the worst look on the runway, again. She came out in this Mardi Gras Carnival costume with granny panties showing. Guest judge, Kristen Johnston, asked her straight out, “What the fuck?” I thought the same thing when she walked out on the runway.

Monica Beverly Hillz had the second to the worst look on the runway, which consisted of chains, bracelets and a collar. The judges commented that it didn’t seem like her mind was in the competition. The comment brought Monica to tears. The comment also brought a confession out of her. She confessed to being transgender, which turns out is not ‘breaking any rules’. RuPaul said it was okay. She also said she was up for elimination and had to lip-sync for her life against Serena ChaCha.

Monica Beverly Hillz and Serena ChaCha had to lip-sync for their life to ‘Only Girl In the World’ by Rihanna. Both of them gave lack-luster lip-syncs. And Miss Serena ChaCha even tried the old ‘split trick’ like she did in the first episode, but it didn’t work this time. Monica got to stay, and Serena ChaCha had to ‘sashay away’.

ChaCha was the worst!
I have to give Monica Beverly Hillz snaps for having the courage to come out as transgender during the competition. Now that she has this monkey off her back, I hope the girl brings the goods next week. The girl has ‘face’ for days. I just haven’t seen any talent out her. It’s still early in the competition. Maybe she’ll surprise us all. We shall see.
