Jane and Pete-e (Mirabella) |
In a weekend that celebrates a Milestone of Legal Marriage in the state of Washington. I look back at what has been an 8 year plus journey for many same sex couples. I have known one couple, Jane and Pete-e for over 12 years, through their involvement in the Seattle Men's Chorus. In 2001, we stood by them as they told Pete-e's story of being a Breast Cancer survivor as one of many couples sharing their stories as part the Sing for the Cure concert. It was that concert as well as Pete-e and Jane's involvement that led to the introduction of the Seattle Women's Chorus, now in its 10th Season.
In 2005, Jane and Pete-e talked more about their life and relationship in Drew Emery's acclaimed documentary,'Inlaws and Outlaws'. They also had a commitment ceremony.
In 2009, Jane and Pete-e were part of the Ref-71 ad campaign to continue the state's Domestic Partnership law.
In Spring 2012, following the 500th public screening of 'INLAWS', they hoped to be part of the Ref-74 campaign to approve Marriage Equality. Both were absent from any public advertising.
At 12:01am on December 6th, Jane and Pete-e, after 35 years, together were the first to apply for their Marriage License. They plan to Marry (Legally) tonight at the SMC Holiday Concert, with both the Men's and Women's performing. It is great milestone for this Golden Couple and much loved in the Seattle Community.

Savage Love (Murray) |
I also reflect on Dan Savage's Journey with partner, Terry Miller. Back in 2004, Savage and Miller applied for a Marriage license and were denied. So Savage, in a very 'Savage way' was given a License to marry a fellow writer (and Female), Amy Jennings (Ruiz)! Savage and Jennings planned a Mock wedding at Timberline nightclub (I was in attendance) and a benefit for Lambda Legal with Wm. Steve Humphrey as the 'Hawaiian Style' Officiant and OUTview Fave, Adrian Ryan as witness. The ceremony wasn't legal, no papers filed, but the purpose was that if Britney Spears could be married for 72 Hours, a 'Gay Wedding' could last longer. Savage and Miller, have one adopted son, D.J. and were married in Vancouver, Canada in 2005. Shockingly how things changed in 8 years as Savage and Miller were finally recognized Today. Tonight they will Host a reception at the Q Club as a benefit for Freedom to Marry. They all lived Happily Ever After!
