Nowhere was this more evident then during Fashion Week, when Out.com asked its readers to rank its list of the 50 most notably dressed gay men as the Best or Worst Dressed. Readers answered in sartorial spades.
From actors, designers, TV personalities, and athletes, nearly 3,000 people weighed in on whom they thought pulled it off, and who just needs to pull it off and try again.
Not surprisingly, fashion designer Tom Ford came out the landslide winner, proving that showing just a little bit of chest can take you a long way. When Out.com told Ford of the results, he sent along this response: “Style is a personal thing. It is what defines you. It is not only about clothes (in fact, it is rarely about clothes) but is about the way that one handles oneself with other people. To treat people kindly, to look them in the eye, to shake their hand firmly and to try to always be proud of ones actions are key elements of style as far as I am concerned. With regards to clothes and dress I think that it is important to find out what you feel comfortable in [I am not talking about physical comfort here] and then to make that look your signature. Personal style, comes from consistency. Know yourself, know what you like and what you don’t like and then build a look around those likes and dislikes. Remain true to your own taste.”
Pop idol Adam Lambert bedazzled his way into second place, with fellow designer—and often skirted—Marc Jacobs in a close third. Never one for strict labels, figure skater Johnny Weir managed to land himself on both sides of the poll, besting actor Zachary Quinto and singer/songwriter Antony Hagerty by a single percentage to claim the number four spot as both Best and Worst Dressed, respectively.
Rounding out the Top 10 Best Dressed are fashion consultant/“Make It Work” Tim Gunn, designer-turned talk show host Nate Berkus, hip-swishing crooner George Michael, fashion designer Michael Bastian, and  TV personality George Kotsiopolous.
Down on the other end of the spectrum, the race for Worst Dressed was a bit more nail biting. Boy George and Perez Hilton where neck-in-poorly-accessorized-neck for the top spot, with George edging it out by two votes at closing time. Bruce Vilanch, our favorite Hollywood Square, proudly wore his t-shirt in the third place spot, and Antony Hegarty and his knit stocking cap where no match for Mr. Weir and his furs, but looks pretty comfortable as he sits in the fifth place position.
The rest of the top ten Worst Dressed include Pete Burns, designer John Galliano, reality-star designer Jeffery Williams, professional dandy Patrick McDonald, and designer Chris March.
