REVEALED: Jackie O Had Cruel Words for Presidents, Other VIPs!

More details—and more barbs—are trickling out from the new book of 47-year-old interviews with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, which hits shelves Wednesday. From the New York Times:
  • On French president Charles DeGaulle: "That egomaniac."
  • On future Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi: "A real prune—bitter, kind of pushy, horrible woman."
  • JFK’s thoughts on Franklin D. Roosevelt: "Charlatan is an unfair word," but "he did an awful lot for effect."
  • On former Democratic presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson: "Violently liberal women in politics" liked him more than JFK because they "were scared of sex," Jackie theorized.

  • On the president of South Vietnam’s sister-in-law and former Congresswoman Clare Boothe Luce: "I wouldn’t be surprised if they were lesbians."
  • On Indonesian President Sukarno: "He had a sort of lecherous look" and "left a bad taste in your mouth."
  • People she actually praises: JFK’s father and brother, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and Robert F. Kennedy; defense secretary Robert S. McNamara; national security adviser McGeorge Bundy; French novelist AndrĂ© Malraux; and Colombian president Alberto Lleras Camargo.
Notably, there is no negative talk about her husband, the Times notes, though she did mention that he cried over the Bay of Pigs.
