A Ugandan newspaper recently ran a front-page story giving pictures, names, and addresses of Uganda’s “top homos,” beneath a headline that read “Hang Them.” Since the story ran on Oct. 9 in a newspaper called Rolling Stone—no relation to the American magazine of the same name—at least four gay Ugandans have been attacked, and many others have gone into hiding, the AP reports.
The paper’s managing editor said the article was “in the public interest.” Since the article hit, the paper has been ordered to stop publishing, but not because of the content; the government simply realized that the paper hadn’t filled out some necessary paperwork. Soon, it’ll be publishing once more. On the bright side, it’s not widely read—it has a circulation of about 2,000 in a country of 32 million. Uganda, you might recall, has a troubled relationship with homosexuality.
