Robert Gibbs keeps getting himself into pickles because of his "increasing candor" and Scott Wilson thinks it's time for the press secretary to fade into a less public role. Both of his recent comments that drew fire—conceding Democrats may lose the House and complaining about criticism from the "professional left"—were grounded in truth, but Gibbs failed in a press secretary's fundamental task of using the art of spin to say such things without alienating people, writes Wilson.
"Inartful," as Gibbs himself said. The press chief already sits in on almost all of President Obama's high-level meetings, and he's been a trusted adviser for seven years. Maybe it's time to make the switch to adviser an official move, suggests Wilson in the Washington Post.
