Sassy Gay Friend is saving the lives of “unreasonably weepy” Shakespearean gals all over YouTube (quite literally: the videos have him counseling Opehlia, Juliet, and Desdemona)—but is he a smart satire or just plain offensive? He dispenses advice as a “very crappy dance beat” plays in the background—either satirizing or embracing, depending on your point of view, the stereotype that “gay men are all extremely fabulous and do absolutely nothing with their lives but advise straight ladies,” writes Sady Doyle on Salon.
But after Doyle spent “entirely too much time analyzing comedy skits on YouTube,” she realized the true bottom line: “Sassy Gay Friend cares about the ladies,” she writes. “He wants you to look at your life! He wants you to look at your choices! And, on a day when you yourself are approaching Shakespearian levels of weepiness, there is comfort in the presence, via YouTube, of Sassy Gay Friend.”
