The buzz about Sam Worthington began with his role in Terminator Salvation; by the time Avatar came out, it was official: This former bricklayer is Hollywood’s next big thing. He auditioned for the first time on a whim, and made something of a name for himself in his native Australia before realizing he wasn’t happy with how he was running his career or his life—so he sold all his things and moved into his car just after turning 30. Two weeks later, James Cameron discovered him.
Despite his newfound mega-success (Clash of the Titans is next), Worthington still sees acting as just a job: “Get up in the morning, go to work, make the boss happy,” he tells Details, and though he enjoys that job, he hesitates to call what he does art. “Artistry has a kind of weird connotation,” he says, “because you can sound like you're going straight up your fucking ass if you say that.”
