I guess being British gave Firth the edge? According to GreginHollywood.com:
Since we know that Jeff Bridges has the best actor Oscar sewn up for Crazy Heart, I’m so glad to see that Colin Firth has just won the best actor prize over in London at the BAFTA Awards, Britain’s version of the Academy Awards held at Royal Opera House in London.
Firth was superb in this Tom Ford-directed gem as a depressed gay college professor in the early 60s who is mourning the death of his long-term partner. The actor beat out fellow Oscar nominees Bridges and George Clooney for the award.
Also at the BAFTAs: The Hurt Locker collected the Best Film Award, while Kathryn Bigelow was named Best Director. The Iraq war film took home a total of four awards. Carey Mulligan won best actress for An Education while supporting acting prizes went to Mo’Nique for Precious and Christoph Waltz for Inglorious Basterds.
