(SHOWcase) Torrey Pines: An animated film about Schizophrenia!

A stop-motion animated adventure film: Coming of age with an undiagnosed schizophrenic single mother in San Diego in the 1980s.

Torrey Pines is a feature film based on a true story by stop-motion animator Clyde Petersen. The film is a queer punk coming-of-age tale, taking place in Southern California in the late 80's and early 1990's. Raised by a schizophrenic single mother, Petersen's life story unfolds in a series of baffling and hallucinated events. With a mother fueled by hallucinations of political conspiracy and family disfunction, Petersen is kidnapped at the age of 12 and taken on a cross-country adventure that will forever alter the family as they know it.

In those awkward teen years, from George Bush 1.0 to Bill Clinton to George Bush 2.0, it's a time of technological growth in American homes. Desktop computer and personal cell phone use is on the rise. Our culture transforms from a place where a person talking to themselves alone in public is labeled as "crazy," to a time where you are an outcast if you don't have a mobile phone and it is perfectly acceptable to rant and rave in public to an invisible person.

(SHOWcase) ToY by Patrick Chapman!

ToY is the story of creative inspiration and desperation, addiction and betrayal. Its a film about two lost souls who find one another.

'ToY' is the story of a gifted yet troubled young artist who is in search of deeper meaning within her works. ‘College’, finds her muse in the embattled life of a high-end escort, ‘Pro’, at the end of her career in Las Vegas Nevada. 'ToY' aims to draw attention to the inner struggles that each and every one of us face on a daily basis. It aims to highlight the fleeting possibility of dreams, the realization of failures, and the confusion of desires within our hearts. It is a film that Hollywood no longer will make. This is not a super-hero film; there are no special effects or cliché Hollywood stigmas. This is a film for true independent film fans; it is one for the audience.

(SHOWcase) Blonde: A Short Film!

Creepy, thrilling and unnerving. Possibly heartwarming. Watch the trailer. Help make it!

The Story (according to Joanna Strange)
I can’t really say too much without giving too much away - after all, it is a short film. Here is what you need to know: There is a young woman. There is a man. She is looking for something. He may have it. He may not.

What I believe makes this story unique is that this is atypical for a thriller (I can say it is a thriller). She does not have daddy issues. She doesn’t jump from relationship to relationship. She isn’t the bitchy best friend, but she isn’t the ingenue. She isn’t the insecure klutz, but she isn’t the pageant winner. I’m not sure what she is, but she is certainly unusual and I have loved writing her. I keep my fingers crossed that Anita Sarkeesian cannot determine her trope. Support US Here!

(SHOWcase) No Pay, Nudity!

A film about actors starring some of the world's best actors: Ted Levine, Laurie Metcalf, Nathan Lane and more.

My movie project tells a story about the private world of actors, a world that's funny, and bittersweet, and rich with creativity. It's a world where incredible bonds form.

I asked Ethan Sandler, a friend and talented screenwriter, to write a script that would capture all of the drama that happens to actors off camera: the heartbreaks and the joy, but most important, the friendships that keep us going through even the bleak times.

And then all these great actors fell in love with his finished script for No Pay, Nudity and signed on.
We all have long careers on Broadway, and in film and TV, like Laurie Metcalf a brilliant stage actress who you also know as Roseanne's sister Jackie, or Ted Levine, who you know from the current hit show The Bridge, the TV series Monk and in his terrifying role as Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs, and Jessica Hecht, the Broadway and TV star who had that great supporting role on Friends. You know Nathan Lane from a multitude of wonderful projects including The Birdcage and The Producers and his recent Tony nominated performance in The Nance.

Our cast also includes the talented actors Boyd Gaines, J. Smith Cameron, Austin Pendleton, Mark Blum, Jeremy Shamos, Jeanine Serrales, Zoe Perry, Joel Higgins, Reg Rogers, Peter Jacobson, Alex Draper, John Bedford Lloyd, Cory Michael Smith, Benjamin Sinclair, Danny Binstock, Ellen Foley and Brent Spiner, the comedian Lewis Black, and the incredible Loudon Wainwright III, who is creating the original music.

And there's me, director Lee Wilkof. My first big break was playing Seymour in the Off-Broadway hit Little Shop of Horrors. Please Support our Kickstarter Campaign by Oct 10th!

(SHOWcase) Matthew Mishory's ABSENT!

Filmmaker Matthew Mishory's (Joshua Tree, 1951) father (and generations of his family) were born in the Jewish agricultural village of Mărculeşti in north-eastern Romania, now a part of the independent state of Moldova. Matthew's father fled Romania with his parents as a small child, three years before Kristallnacht. Others were not so lucky; the village and its inhabitants were destroyed in the Holocaust. In the decades since, the region itself has withered under years of Soviet neglect and Moldovan poverty. In the fall of 2013, Matthew will become the first member of his family to return in over 75 years. Working with renowned cinematographer Michael Marius Pessah, Romanian producer Sabin Dorohoi, and a very small crew, he will document the last remaining vestiges of Jewish Mărculeşti (an ancient crumbling cemetery, an unmarked mass grave), meet the region's few current inhabitants, and capture the profound absence of a once-thriving community and way of life. A beautifully photographed, contemplative, and essential step toward reconciliation with the past, the film will also serve as a subtle but timely reminder -- as xenophobia again surges on the Continent and in the United States.

(SHOWcase) Diana - A Short Film‏!

Two travelers search the world for their missing friend and invoke powerful magics to bring her back to life in the short film Diana.

On August 10th a small but intrepid band of young, attractive and intelligent filmmakers embarked from Seattle to the desert plains of the Palouse and captured Diana’s strange and compelling story on breathtaking Super 16mm film! One of the last ever productions to be shot on film? Who can say? Help us be a part of history.

We made camp in the serene Potholes State Park on the shores of the O’Sullivan Reservoir. There we dined rustic on simple meals cooked over molten coals by a producer and an actor. With the dawn we marched into the Columbia Basin Wildlife Reserve. Among the gullies and cliffs and grass and tiny lakes we trained our camera on deer, heron, two weary searchers, one beautiful corpse, and her extraordinary metamorphosis. (SHOWcase) Lewd & Lascivious!

The triumphant story of straight ministers & drag queens overcoming gay bashing & police brutality in 1965 and how it changed laws.

Before Stonewall! Before The Rainbow Flag! Before Gay Pride Parades!

The infamous "Raid on California Hall" happened and very few people know the story!

This film is the first hand account of that frosty night in 1965 when the San Francisco Police Department illegally raided a private Masquerade Ball being held by straight ministers and "homophile" (yes, that is what they were called back then) organizations who simply wanted to share a festive evening together.

(SHOWcase) Rocketmen, the Webseries!

Part drama and discussion of “jobs programs,” part comedy and certainly a deranged adventure, Rocketmen is a web serial featuring a host of Seattle performers, with animated interludes by Animator/Director Webster Crowell. Rocketmen were intended to combat the threats of tomorrow. If those threats never arrive, what purpose will they serve? Who do they save now? Rocketmen want to know: are you in peril?

The Rocketmen are a fraction of a splinter in the body of the Federal Budget. The contemporary remains of a WPA jobs program, the Department of Municipal Rocketry employs men (who are maybe not employable anywhere else) to wear hydrogen-fueled rocket packs and spend their days on city rooftops, awaiting any peril that might befall the city. There is a lot of waiting. In the old days, there was the threat of Russians to battle and 50-foot robots to contend with. Now, they rescue cats, detain illegal skywriters, and start the occasional roof fire. Some of these Rocketmen haven’t flown since their training session. Mostly, they kill time waiting for the emergency phone to ring, which never happens. Until one day, when it rings.

(SHOWCASE) SO FUNNY!

"So Funny" is an indie comedy set in New York City that follows comedy superfan Barb Schatz as she attempts to change her life.

so here's the backstory...

Hey everybody! Co-writers and producers Sas Goldberg and Jake Wilson here. We met almost ten years ago (jeesh!) at The University of Michigan and instantly fell in love. Not like love love, but like a best friend kinda love. Both Scorpios, we instantly clicked and really knew how to make each other laugh. After graduating college and moving to (or back to) the city, we signed up for improv and sketch classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade and began writing together. We started writing “So Funny” in the fall of 2011 and we are lucky enough to be shooting the film in the summer of 2013.

(SHOWCASE) Belinda Carlisle's Gay Son in an Upcoming Noir Thriller, Disappear Here!

Mason
The teaser for James Duke Mason's Kickstarter-funded noir thriller Disappear Here is out. Paper writes: ...the film is directed by Matthew Mishory (Joshua Tree, 1951), produced by Mason's father Morgan Mason (producer of Sex, Lies & Videotape who got back into the business to produce it) and centers around a young actor (played by Mason) who becomes embroiled in a blackmail conspiracy to derail a senator's presidential campaign. The full feature will be shot later this year. Mason told us back in the day that the movie is "going to serve as a catalyst for making a difference for the openly gay actors in Hollywood and trying to shed some light on those issues...that have never been exposed in this way before."

Mason has some experience in the 'openly gay actor' category. You may recall his 'Trailblazer' campaign which had the mission of creating a more accepting environment for openly LGBT entertainers in Hollywood. He also gives us a little exclusive. His mom, Belinda Carlisle, has a cameo in the film.
