(OUTview NW) RE-view: Seattle Rep's “Constellations" is a Unique Love Story that Travels Through Time and Space!

Who is Kissing Who? (Alan Alabastro)
by MK Scott

About 20 years ago at the Seattle Fringe Festival, I remember seeing a play that started at the ending and moved backwards to the beginning, the play, "Betrayal" by Harold Pinter, was unique and that is how much I admired Nick Payne’s “Constellations”, a One Act, currently at the Seattle Rep.

There is big difference with 2 characters, who are British and are played in 3 or 4 alternated realities.

For example,  Roland (Max Gordan Moore) and Marianne (Alexandra Tavares) , meet at a barbecue and strike up a conversation at the same time in space, all characters are similar but different scenarios in the other realities. Get It?

The stage design is just a bare tilted stage as each actor plays the same scene over and over with a different result each time.

There is the first-date dilemma: Will the spacey, spontaneous Marianne and more earthbound Roland sleep together or not, decide to get involved or not? We see how the admission of an outside affair might destroy their relationship — or strengthen it. Confrontations with mortality and loss also diverge, as do responses to a chance meeting at a ballroom-dancing class, before (or after) the affair they might have had.

Then there is a dilemma of the health crises of Marianne: In one world she is fine while in the other she needs treatment and in another she wants to die in dignity.

When the back screen projects the Universe, we know that the theme that Love is Universal and if it is meant to be, it usually means it is. Beautiful!

‘Constellations’ by Nick Payne continues  through Feb. 21 at Seattle Rep's Leo K Theater, Click HERE for Tix.
