I found myself back in Portland (this past weekend) seeing another Friend's show that he directed. This show was different in style with the previous show, Pixiedust's 'La Cage Aux Folles' directed by fellow BHS alum, Greg Tamblyn, and now coming down to see Live on Stage's 'Rocky Horror Picture Show', directed by other BHS Alum, John Oules, who was also involved with La Cage is some complacity. Obviously the shows are different but Both had the same style.
This infamous musical is written by Richard O’Brien, with musical direction by Darcy White and choreography by Kemba Shannon.
I am so used to seeing the film and it was hard not to compare. The obvious was the lack of special effects, but I will ignore that detail since it is about the cast and music.
The story is a wonderful homage to the 30’s & 40’s Sci-Fi/Horror flicks from Universal of the mad doctor and his minions and of the 50’s B, B&W movies of aliens invading earth and of Corman’s 60’s, low-budget flicks of mayhem and murder. And the setting is just like those old films: a creepy, old house in a desolate place on a stormy, dark night. And it even has a voice-over introduction, like many of those classics, from a Narrator (Gary Norman).
It seems that a young, naïve couple, Brad (Matt Brown) and Janet (Leah Seligman) are to meet a scientist Dr. Scott (Darren Hurley), when their car breaks down in the forest. Finding shelter in a dilapidated mansion, they are wary of the odd butler that greets them, Riff Raff (the FAB, Eric Little) and his two main minions, Magenta (Claire Rigsby) and Columbia (Lindsay Schramm).
Overall, Oules continues along with Tamblyn to make Portland Theater a Must See Event and help carry on the traditions of our mentor, James N. Erickson.
Live on Stage's Rocky Horror Picture Show continues World Trade Center Theater through November 8th. Click HERE for more.
