(MK SCOTT) EXCLUSIVE: Cyndi Lauper on Cher and How she still wants to have FUN after 30 years!

 by MK Scott

Cyndi Lauper is a Legend that credits Cher as an influence and after 12 years after opening for her during Cher's never ending Farewell  Tour, she is back as the opening act for the Dressed to Kill Tour, which comes to Seattle's Key Arena this weekend.  I was emailed Cyndy some questions and she responded. Look for Cyndy to talk about Cher, the 30th Anniversary of her Iconic "She so Unusual" album and the Pride from True Colors.

MK: Nearly 12 years later, you are opening for CHER again, what have been the biggest differences, between then and now?

CYNDI: Well of course completely different set lists! It’s been 10 years since last we were out together. We had such a great time together on the road. So when she asked me again to do this tour, I couldn't say no. Her shows are really amazing. Amazing production, amazing singing, amazing style! She is a class act and a superstar. It’s her final tour so don’t be silly run out and buy tickets

MK: What do you like about Seattle?

CYNDI: I love Seattle. Always have a great time whenever I am there. It’s a city with a great identity. Music is great,...amazing restaurants…beautiful city. A town of music lovers that is for sure. I am thrilled whenever my tours go out that I get to hit Seattle.

MK: How has Cher influenced your life?

CYNDI: When Cher first started out in the 70's making records, I was a fan and of course I loved the Sonny & Cher Show and then the Cher Show. (I just love a good variety show!). Cher showed me yea you can do it all - in that show she sang, acted, and the show itself was a study about fashion --- amazing clothes, hair and makeup. Then years later when she continued to grow and grow as a recording artist and an actress, i was just so encouraged by that. She of course had this deep talent, so her success wasn’t surprising. I also knew how hard she worked for it, how she made her own path to get to the top. She made me reach for my own dreams. Then years later when I met her and she was so supportive to me and my career, it was just something that I never took for granted.

MK: You are also celebrating the 30th Anniversary of your debut Album, 'She's So Unusual', are you STILL Unusual? Still Want to Have FUN?

CYNDI:  Of course yes and yes!

MK: In the Last decade or so, you have been part of the TRUE COLORS tour raising Money for HRC, what are you the most proud of from that experience?

CYNDI: There was a lot to be proud of from the True Colors Tour, from raising over $250,000 for HRC and other LGBT organizations to raising awareness around the need for hate crimes legislations and the importance of voting. But, the thing I am most proud of is the fact that the True Colors Fund grew out of the success we had on the road. Every night we saw the response the crowd had to the message we were sending through music and comedy. It inspired us to try and do something year round and thus the True Colors Fund was born. The impact the organization has had in the past 6 years has surpassed our wildest expectations, especially around our work to help homeless gay and transgender youth through our Forty to None Project. The tour was about inspiring the audience to get informed and get involved, what ended up happening is we got the gift of inspiration back from them in return.

MK: What does TRUE COLORS (the song) mean to you?

CYNDI:  It means so much to me that True Colors has been received as a healing song because that is what I had hoped for when I recorded it. I had a friend dying from AIDS and he felt so alone and rejected not just by his family and friends but by the world, so I sang the song to him and to anyone that has ever felt that they were not good enough, that has been made to feel like an outsider which I can relate to and many people can relate to. So the fact that 30 years later people still find strength in this song and tell me it gave them encouragement and hope in dark times is so great.

MK: Thank You, You will always remain an Icon in my eyes!
