I’ve been waiting and wanting to love Brothers & Sisters again. And last night, it happened! I loved the show again and didn’t want the episode to end, observes Greg in Hollywood.
Is my renewed love permanent? Time will tell.
The episode picked up from last week’s shocking revelation that Scotty (Luke Macfarlane) had cheated on Kevin (Matthew Rhys). It seemed to come out of left field and was so out of character for Scotty. I was annoyed by the whole thing.
But things were fleshed out via some flashbacks and we see that Scotty had a one-nighter with a HOT waiter the night of his restaurant opening. Kevin, depressed over a surrogate losing their baby and his brother-in-law left in a coma after a car accident, was MIA on one of the biggest nights of his husband’s life.
The Walker family’s reactions were a key part of the drama.
Justin (Dave Annable): “I actually don’t believe it. Dude’s cheat but Scotty’s not that dude.”
Nora (Sally Field): “It’s hard to believe. This can’t happen. … Kevin and Scotty, they are the one Walker marriage that is not going down in flames.” She later tells her devastated son: “You have to work it out, you have to try. … Scotty told you the truth, he didn’t have to do that. That counts for a lot.”
The best scenes involved Kevin, Scotty and Saul.
Kevin is filled with rage and hurt and Rhys conveyed that so well: “YOU did this. You ruined our marriage. … I’m in pain and you put me here.”
He can’t believe his “perfect” husband has done this to him.
Scotty to Kevin: “I’m just as damaged and screwed-up as the rest of you. I’m not perfect Kevin, I’m not perfect.”
Saul (Ron Rifkin), Kevin’s gay uncle, was the most hostile to Scotty after learning of the infidelity. This maks things very uncomfortable since they are partners in a restaurant and hosting a charity function that night.
At the function, Kevin punches out a guy who he thinks was the one Scotty slept with then Justin punches out the actual guy.
After the fist fights etc, Saul and Scotty are cleaning up the restaurant and have a heart-to-heart. In a very moving scene, Saul tells Scotty: “You’re my family too – you two are about as close to perfect as anything I’ve ever seen. … You and Kevin were living my dream. When I found out what happened, everything seemed less possible.”
Scotty tells him not to lose hope.
