Having been raised by two moms, Ry Russo-Young was thrilled to see the recent study showing that kids with lesbian parents “turn out just fine.” It was a victory for her parents “after so many years of struggling to come out and have a family,” the filmmaker writes in the Daily Beast, as she recalls her childhood with moms Russo and Robin—who was estranged from her family when she decided to have a child.
“My moms fought to defend their choices as parents,” she writes, recalling “‘real’ family” activities like “dinner together every night, family vacations, Boggle, the tooth fairy, Sesame Street, family pets, and school plays”—and lots of talking. “We weren’t a family in the traditional or nuclear sense, but we were in the most important ways. We were a unit, a team, a group united by love.” And when Russo-Young “came out” as straight, her moms gave their blessing.
