ISSUES: Mass. Catholic School Boots Lesbians' Son

A Massachusetts Catholic school has rescinded acceptance of an 8-year-old boy, saying his lesbian parents' relationship is in "discord" with the religion's teachings, according to the boy's mom. "I'm accustomed to discrimination as a gay woman," the mother said. "But I didn't expect it against my child." She was told of the decision in a conference call with officials of St. Paul Elementary School in Hingham. The Boston archdiocese is investigating the situation, officials told AP.

The archdiocese does not have a policy prohibiting children of same-sex marriages from attending Catholic schools, said spokesman Terrence Donilon. Massachusetts became the first state in the nation to legalize gay marriage in 2004. A Catholic school in Colorado last month also refused to re-enroll two students because they have lesbian parents. The Denver Archdiocese stood by the decision of the Sacred Heart of Jesus school.
