TMZ and Gawker were right: Chely Wright is the celebrity who came out to People this week. The magazine—after much Internet speculation that the country musician was the subject of its cover piece—released an online teaser of the story today. “There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality,” says the 39-year-old, explaining why she didn’t come out earlier. “I hid everything for my music.”
However, “nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out,” says the award-winning artist, probably best known among non-country fans for her 1999 hit “Single White Female.” Coincidentally enough, she also has a new book and CD coming out this week. The only question that remains: How will the conservative members of her fan base react?
