Jordan was the Biggest Queen! SMC |
by
MK Scott
This weekend was the Spring Concert of THREE Queens in ONE. You got, of course , the World Famous, Seattle Men's Chorus, add the Music of one the greatest groups in History and mix it up with the stories of Master Story Queen, Leslie Jordan. You Got 'Dancing Queen'.
Attending the Sunday performance at Seattle's McCaw Hall and as the curtain rose up to see the SMC's 2nd ABBA Theme Concert in 11 years. Will this one be just as Awesome?
The
2002 production was Epic with a Full Dancing All-Male Group, Twirling Flags by the Seattle Flagging Boys, and then SMC's very own ABBA. With
Benny, Bjorn and 2 men in drag as
Agnetha, and Anni-Frid.
Fast Forward to 2013, and this time the Chorus is combining a new ABBA show with the talents of Leslie Jordan. Jordan last performed with the Chorus in June 2009. The 'Dancing Queen' show was last performed in the NW by Portland Gay Men's Chorus in March 2010.

Beefcake always entertains SMC |
This show had all the songs (Super Trouper, Take a Chance on Me) and elements from the 2002 show, including the Dancing Boys, with 3 of them in the shower scene during 'When I kissed the Teacher". For 'Waterloo' and especially for 'SOS', they showcased the talents of the Mixed Dance Quartet, who made their debut in last Season's 'Come Together' Beatles Theme Concert, which I didn't care for, because for nearly 30 Years of Men dancing with Men in Drag, why all of the sudden, add a Mixed group to an All men's Chorus? You would hope the audience would more entertained and expect the gender bending performance. In 2002, SOS was performed by the ABBA Look alike group.

More Visuals to go with Jordan's Story |
Leslie Jordan was Great as always and no could tell a story of being a Slut in Boy Scouts and Telling stories of his Mama in Chattanooga, TN. The stories were set in the Early to Mid-70's, which worked well together in with the ABBA soundtrack.
Act ONE ended with a SMC Favorite, 'Does your Mother Know?' with a nice scene staged by the Dancing Boys.
In Act TWO, Jordan was the highlight when the chorus belted out a Parody ABBA Medley called, Mama's Hysterical Blindness, as Jordan told the story of Mama's Blindness was cured upon meeting a Billionaire. It was a great way to blend the artists together in one number.
Captain Smartypants did TWO numbers, 'Fernando' and I Do, I Do, I Do.
The show ended with Mamma Mia, with the Encore being, What Else? 'Dancing Queen'! That is

The ABBA 4some were late to the Party! |
when The Flaggers FINALLY came Out as well as the Infamous ABBA 4some making their 3rd Appearance at a SMC concert in 11 Years. But, why wait for the finale, when they could come out way earlier? Obviously, they know the audience loves them.
Overall, the performance melded well together with Jordan's Storytelling; My only gripe is that Mixed dance group appearing in place as the ABBA 4some that the audience truly wanted to be entertained by. Don't get me wrong, the Dance 4some worked well in this concert compared to last year's 'Coming Together', but having a mixed group along with over 180 Mostly Gay men and nearly 30 years of Gender Bending characters, the 2 Female members of the Dance troupe stick out like a sore thumb.
Well then again, no one in the area has re-invented themselves more the Seattle Men's Chorus!
