(OUTscene NW) RE-view: 5th Avenue's Damn Yankees is Angelic with a lot of Hocus Pocus!

by MK Scott

Believe it or I have never seen 'Damn Yankees' and all I knew it was a Baseball musical. I knew of one song "You Gotta have Heart'.  In the promotions for 5th Avenue Theater's current production I imagined more of a 'Take me Out' style of more erotic moments.

Book by George Abbott and Douglas Wallop,Music & Lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, Adapted from Wallop's 1954 novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant,Directed by Mark S. Hoebee; Choreography by Denis Michael Jones, A Co-Production with Paper Mill Playhouse

It’s the Faustian tale of Joe Boyd (Hugh Hastings), who chooses Baseball over his wife by a deal offered by Mr. Applegate (Hans Altwies), who offers to take Joe up on his offer, after some Hocus Pocus, Joe turns into a 22 year old named Joe Hardy (Christopher Charles Wood), the greatest ball player ever.  who will lead the Washington Senators to win it all.  But when Applegate sees that Joe is still pining for his old life, he enlists the help of Lola (Chryssie Whitehead), his Sexy Vamp, to turn the head of the devoted man. This may not be exactly the “Damn Yankees” you’re familiar with as it’s a bit different from the 1994 revival and much more akin to the original 1955 version, which is a little Old Fashioned.

Wood is an Angel with a beautiful voice and nice body, from what i could see through his (see-through) white tank-top.

I was hoping see more skin in the Locker room scenes, but only 2 of the chorus boys went shirtless and only one was in a towel.

Speaking of Lola in the song,  “Whatever Lola Wants” with  sex appeal and voice.  (I recognized the 'What 'Lola Wants, Lola gets' song from the Diet Pepsi commercial with Sofia Vergara and David Beckham.)

Luckily Altwies tackles Applegate with Pure Evil.

The Special effects for the Hocus Pocus moments was the highlght

“Damn Yankees” plays at the 5th Avenue Theatre through May 20th.  For tickets or information contact the 5th Avenue box office at 206-625-1900 or visit them online at www.5thavenue.org.
