ISSUES: Sex Partner Killed Ugandan Gay Activist?

A Ugandan man beaten to death last week was not murdered over his gay-rights campaign, but was killed by a sexual partner, say police. But gay activists in the country have called for more proof amid concerns that the government would hide any homophobic element to David Kato's murder for fear of losing foreign aid money, the Globe and Mail reports. Police said they nabbed a "well-known thief" who said he’d been staying with Kato.

Enock Nsubuga said Kato had bailed him out of prison; then, "according to the suspect, he negotiated with the deceased to be paid money as he was to be used as a sexual partner," Uganda's top officer said. Nsubuga says the two had sex but Kato gave him no money; "the following day, Nsubuga confesses that he picked a hammer from the bathroom and hit him on the head," he added. "There is nothing concrete to suggest that Nsubuga was motivated by hate, although we are not dismissing it."
