ISSUES: HIV+ Singer Convicted for Unprotected Sex

Having unprotected sex isn't usually the best idea. Having unprotected sex when you know you're HIV-positive is downright criminal, as onetime pop starlet Nadja Benaissa found today when a German court convicted her of grievous bodily harm for failing to disclose her condition to three partners—one of whom contracted HIV. Benaissa's punishment? A two-year suspended sentence and 300 hours of community service among the HIV-positive.

If you're not totally up on the German pop scene (and who really can ever be?), Benaissa found fame as lead singer of the girl band No Angels, which formed on a TV show in 2000, CNN reports. The 28-year-old was tried in youth court because she was 17 at the time of the first incident. "I am sorry from the heart," she told the court. Her HIV-positive victim wasn't buying it: "You have borne so much suffering in the world," he told her.
