After spending a remarkable 8 weeks with the Pacific Northwest Ballet in 2008, the fascinating, truly untouchable genius Twyla Tharp has returned to our fair city to put another mark on our local culture loving people. "All Tharp" is PNB's second offering this season, which opens on November 5th, and runs until November 14th. The piece is bound to delight any lover of modern dance, and classical ballet, and offers three pieces, all familiar to PNB's dedicated audience. But although each piece glimmers in their distinct differences and contributions to contemporary dance, it's especially wonderful to have them presented back to back for those who missed out the first time around. Twyla Tharp's history is a fine read, both touching on her personal home life as a child, and first introduction to dance. The laundry list of names she has rubbed elbows with is extraordinary, from esteemed names in the dance community, such as Martha Graham, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Merce Cunningham, to film, stage, and even contemporary music legends like Billy Joel and Bob Dylan. To top it all off, she's a recipient of a Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, was inducted a member of the Academy of Achievement, and is a Kennedy Center Honor recipient.
"All Tharp"'s three movements are titled Opus 111, featuring Johannes Brahams' String Quintent No. 2 in G Major; Afternoon Ball, featuring Vladimir Martynov's Autumn Ball of the Elves; and Waterbaby Bagatelles, featuring music by Anton Webern, Kevin Volans, John Lurie, David Lang, Astor Piazzolla, Mickey Hart, and John Adams.
