For episode 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race - Season 5, titled “Sugar Ball”, we are left with the final four competing for the title of America’s Next Drag Super Star. Two are from my original top three picks, Roxxy Andrews and Detox, who have both had to lip-sync for their life. The other two are my underdogs that surprised us all by sailing through the competition without having to lip-sync for their life once, Alaska and Jinkx Monsoon. One of my original top three picks and one of my underdogs ended up having to battle it out at the lip-sync. Who they are will surprise you. Who ended up winning the lip-sync will surprise you even more.
It all begin with the mini-challenge where the girls made hand puppets of one of the other girls they picked at random. They then had to use their puppets in a comedic sketch. The girl with the most dragged-out puppet and funniest sketch would be named the winner. Alaska, who had to make a puppet of Roxxy, put on a hilarious show, just as she did at the RuPaul Roast. Of all the girls, Alaska has the most sophisticated humor. This did not go unnoticed by RuPaul, who declared Alaska the winner of this week’s mini-challenge.
For the main challenge, the girls had to create three looks for the runway: a “Super Duper Sweet 16” look, a “Sugar Mama - Executive Realness” look, and a “Candy Couture” look that had to be made using candy. As the winner of the mini-challenge, Alaska got a 15-seconds head-start choosing what candy she wanted to incorporate into her “Candy Couture” look. Alaska also had to choreograph a group dance routine.
Regarding the dance routine, let’s just say Alaska didn’t ‘fuck it up’. She kept it simple, too simple. Thankfully, Jinkx Monsoon kept the energy up. She had the most original physical comedy routine of all the girls. Jinkx just has away of bringing life to that which is lifeless.
For the runway challenge, I will start with the girl who RuPaul declared safe, Roxxy Andrews. Roxxy almost always looks phenomenal. However, her “Sweet 16” look read more like “Sweet 26”. She looked way to grown to pass for an innocent, sweet 16. Wearing a fitted, short, black velvet dress with a black cape trimmed in gold embroidery, Roxxy’s “Executive” look gave the most dramatic entrance of all the girls. Her “Candy Couture” look got the ‘best in show’ title also. She made a strapless, full-length, fringe dress made entirely of colored licorice rope. The dress had movement, good design, perfect tailoring and proportioning. The judges even suggested that she have this dress made with real fabric, because it suited her so perfectly.
RuPaul named Alaska the winner of this week’s main challenge. She’s the only girl that gave the judges exactly what they wanted for each look. Her “Sweet 16” look most resembled what a modern-day, fashionable, sixteen year old girl would wear. Alaska also had a very strong “Executive” look. She wore a low-cut, black, pants suit that’s usually hard to make look feminine, but the tie at the waist made the look work. A bleach-blond pixie cut completed her look, turning her into the most feared woman all Wall Street. Wearing a pink, cotton-candy creation for her “Candy Couture” look, a look I thought was a bit predictable and unoriginal, she met the requirements of the challenge. Therefore, Alaska wins.
Detox and Jinkx Monsoon ended up in the bottom two for having horrific “Sweet 16” and “Candy Couture” looks. Detox’s “Sweet 16” look reminded me of something I would see in the movie “The 80s Rejects”, if they ever made that movie. And her “Candy Couture” look had a poorly conceived concept, and was horribly crafted. Jinkx Monsoon’s “Sweet 16” look looked more like “Sweet 50”. She looked like an aging hippie chick who refuses to dress age appropriately. And Jinkx’s “Candy Couture” look didn’t even have any discernible candy on it.
Being in the bottom two, Detox and Jinkx Monsoon had to ‘lip-sync for their life’ to “Malambo No. 1” by Yma Sumac. This being Jinkx’s first time in the bottom two definitely made me worry for her. I knew the bitch could sing, dance, and make somebody laugh, but could she ‘lip-sync for her life’. After the lip-sync was over, it was undeniable - Jinkx Monsoon is a ‘Drag Virtuoso’. Her performance matched the spirit of the song. She out danced, out moved, and out lip-synced Detox at every turn. Detox just couldn’t keep up. At the end, Jinkx Monsoon ended up in the final three with Alaska and Roxxy, and my beloved Detox had to sashay away.
We now have our final three girls who are still competing for the title of America’s Next Drag
Super Star, and it’s anyone’s guess who the winner will be. But I must admit, I’m rooting for Jinkx Monsoon. After all the shade she endured from all of the other girls, she’s definitely the most deserving. I hope RuPaul sees it the same way. Good luck, Jinkx Monsoon.
