An older man in a pick-up truck pulled over today and asked me in a thick Tennessee drawl, “Are you picking up kids?” Stunned a bit, I said in reply, “Excuse me?” I heard him right the second time as he slowly repeated, “I said are you picking up cans?” “Ha ha. No. I’m walking across the country.” “Oh. OK then.” And he was off.
Here’s a list of some more things people think I’m doing while pushing Equality Cart:
SELLING ICE CREAM
One time while I was walking at night out west somewhere and a guy yelled from his house, which was set back quite a ways, “What you selling? Ice cream?” With the cars whizzing by, I had him repeat himself three or four times before I understood him.
In Georgia, I was walking through a neighborhood and saw two children playing ball in the front yard of a house. As soon as one of the kids saw me they ran to the door of the house exclaiming in a high-pitched voice, “Mom, the ice cream man is here! The ice cream man is here!”
SELLING JUNK
Once I was walking by a junk store or thrift store, sometimes out here I can’t tell which is which. A guy stopped me as I walked by and asked if I was here to sell him some stuff.
WHAT YOU SELLING?
Once a passenger in a car that was passing me by yelled out the window, “What ya selling?” I yelled back, “Equality!”
NOW, A QUESTION FOR YOU…
In which state have I been asked multiple times if I’m selling Sno Cones?
