Imagine getting the chance to do prom over again, only this time without all the rules about no alcohol or hanky-panky. In an increasing number of cities you can do just that, as "adult proms" grow in popularity. The preparation is all very familiar: Buy a glitzy new dress (or finally find another use for that bridesmaid gown), get your hair and nails done, and go out to a nice dinner. But then things change: The punch is spiked, you can bring your own alcohol (one couple decided upon Jell-O shots ... delivered via syringe), and there's no curfew. Couldn't bring a same sex date before, bring them now!
But, the New York Times notes, there's still some of the same awkwardness, with women in the bathroom wondering where their dates went and the occasional PDA on the dance floor. And yes, you still vote for a prom king and queen—but at one version in Green Bay, Wis., at least, you have to pay for the privilege, and can vote as many times as you're willing to pay. Adults "still want to have fun,” says one reveler. “Every year when I see the prom dresses I think about how much fun it would be to have my own again."
