Nearly every year for close to two decades, Kate Raphael has marched in one and only one political parade, held the last Saturday in June, with thousands of fellow lesbians, SF Chronicle Reports.
But unless organizers of the 19th annual San Francisco Dyke March pull together nearly $30,000, the 51-year-old Oakland resident may be left without a parade.
"This is essentially the one day a year when dykes are really visible in our community, and people stop and think about the contributions that lesbians have made to the queer movement," Raphael said. "That it might not happen makes me really sad."
The march draws lesbians from around and beyond the Bay Area and is part of the San Francisco Pride celebrations, which are among the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender gatherings in the nation.
