Lisa Larges felt the call to the ministry, but she also felt the call to be herself.
An open lesbian, Larges has been a candidate for ministry in the Presbyterian Church since 1986, yet roadblocks along the way have kept her from becoming an ordained minister.
By the time she graduated from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1989, many of her gay and lesbian classmates either chose to stay silent about their sexuality or left the church, she said.
Neither option was suitable for Larges, who is the minister coordinator for the organization That All May Freely Serve.
"I feel like this is my church, and this is my call," she said. "I don't want to abandon it."
