BROADWAY: It’s official: Ricky Martin to star in “Evita” in 2012!

It had already been reported last spring that Ricky Martin would be starring in a new Broadway production of Evita but it seems that it is only in recent days that the deal became official.

The show is set to premiere in the spring of 2012 with Ricky in the role of Che and Elena Roger reprising her West End performance as Eva Perón.

Ricky has been plenty busy since coming out publicly as a gay man last year. He published his memoir Me and embarked on a massive publicity tour then got to work on a new album due out next month. His new first single, The Best Thing About Me is You has already been released.

Here is what Ricky had to say about Evita in a statement: “I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to perform on many of the world’s largest concert stages, but I’ve never lost my love for the intimacy of the theater. I’m delighted to know that after I’ve had the chance to share new music and tour over the coming year, that I will then return once again to Broadway. I’m looking forward to playing such an essential part in Michael Grandage’s wonderful production and the chance to work with the tremendously talented Elena Roger.”
