‘Skating with the Stars’ Crowns Fred Palascak (and Rebecca Budig) the Champion

It was down to “the natural” — soap star Rebecca Budig (w/ her Gorgeous Partner, Fred Palascak)— and “the underdog” — reality star Bethenny Frankel — on Tuesday night’s season (and series?) finale of “Skating with the Stars.”

In the end (and from the beginning), it was Rebecca Budig who iced the competition and was named the winner of ABC’s experiment in ‘Skating with the Stars.’

Even though Budig (”All My Children“) was the frontrunner from the get-go and came into the scary competition with the most experience — having skated pairs with her sister as a child — the actress was “shocked” at her win.

“I’m shocked. Really, I am,” Budig said in accepting the first (and last?) ever Golden Skates trophy. “I owe all of this to Fred, who is an unbelievable teacher. I owe it all to you,” she gushed to partner Fred Palascak.

Frankel took the loss in stride saying, “It was really a very, very challenging and rewarding experience … Rebecca deserves it. She should be a real ice skater.”

As far as finales go, this one wasn’t quite the show-stopping thrill ride an ice-skating finale should have been. It didn’t help matters that the past five weeks of the competition have been described as “boring” by most reviewers.

Only an hour long and featuring just one truly great performance – the opening number with the pro skaters (With Johnny Weir skating with another Man!)– the finale was just a big wah-wah-wah. It was appropriate that the person who should have won actually did win, although that predictability didn’t help offer any watercooler moments.

The only excitement came when Budig scored the first perfect scores of the season with a 60 (30 for technical and 30 for artistic) for her final performance to Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold.” Frankel’s last skate to “Round and Round” brought her a mere 51 points.

Now both of these ice queens can skate back to their day jobs.

I also think Fred's Bi-ceps had something to do with their popularity!
