Greg in Hollywood predicts the winners of TV category of SAG awards.
I think in terms of pure brilliant ensemble acting, you have to give this award to Modern Family. I think they are right up there with the likes of The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show in terms of peerless ensemble acting.
Rounding out the category are the casts of 30 Rock, The Office and (big surprise!) Hot in Cleveland!
I gotta say, I love Hot in Cleveland because it not only reminds me of the great sitcoms like The Golden Girls and Designing Women, but it gives four really terrific bonafide TV stars a chance to shine: Valerie Bertinelli, Wendi Malick, Jane Leeves and, of course, the phenomenal Betty White.
Miss White received the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award last year but at 88, she’s is showing on Hot in Cleveland, Saturday Night Live (and everywhere else it seems!) that she is not through yet. She also earned a SAG nomination for best female actress in a comedy series!
The seven-time Emmy winner will face off against the sensational Jane Lynch for Glee, Tina Fey for 30 Rock, Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie and Sofia Vergara for Modern Family.
Hard to call a winner in this one but I’d have to go with Edie Falco who took home the Emmy in September. Her show is not a pure comedy but what she does each week is some of the best acting on television in any genre.
In the best male actor in a comedy series, I’m thrilled to see that Chris Colfer of Glee is among the five nominees. He is such a breakout young star and what he does as gay high school student Kurt each week is so funny at times, so tender at other times. There is no one else on TV like this character or this actor.
Chris has some tough competition including two of the stars of Modern Family: Ty Burrell and Ed O’Neill who was the only adult cast member passed over for an Emmy nod. Also nominated are Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock and Steve Carell for The Office.
Tough to predict a winner here but I think Chris Colfer might be able to pull this one off! If he doesn’t win, it will go to one of the Modern Family guys.
Other TV nominations:
Best Ensemble (Drama): Boardwalk Empire, The Closer, Dexter , The Good Wife and Mad Men.
Prediction: The Good Wife has become the best ensemble on television.
Best Male Actor (Drama Series): Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C Hall (Dexter) , Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Hugh Laurie (House).
Prediction: Hamm is way overdue. This should be his year but Buscemi has been a revelation and everyone loves a comeback. I’m going with Buscemi.
Best Female Actor (Drama Series): Glenn Close (Damages), Mariska Hargitay (L&O: SVU) , Julianna Marguiles (The Good Wife), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).
Prediction: Such a tough call. Moss is due but Sedgwick and Marguiles are so deserving. I’m going with Julianna Marguiles.
Best Male Actor (Miniseries/Movie): John Goodman (You Don’t Know Jack), Al Pacino (You Don’t Know Jack), Dennis Quaid (That Special Relationship), Edgar Ramirez (Carlos) and Patrick Stewart (Macbeth).
Prediction: No contest: Emmy winner Pacino will prevail.
Best Female Actor (Miniseries/Movie): Claire Danes (Temple Grandin), Catherine O’Hara (Temple Grandin), Julia Ormond (Temple Grandin), Winona Ryder (When Love is Not Enough), and Susan Sarandon (You Don’t Know Jack).
Prediction: No contest: Emmy winner Danes will win.
Congratulations to all the television nominees!
