CULTURE: Actress Kelly McGillis and Melanie Leis have entered into a civil partnership in New Jersey!

Kelly McGillis, the beautiful actress who defended Jodie Foster in The Accused, won Tom Cruise’s heart in Top Gun and Harrison Ford’s in Witness, was joined in a civil union on Wednesday with sales executive Melanie Leis, the New York Times reports.

Congratulations to them both! Hopefully they, and all other same-sex couples in this country, will be able to be fully married soon.

The ladies met in 2000 when Ms. Leis was a bartender at a restaurant in Key West, Fla., that Ms. McGillis owned with her second husband, Fred Tillman, with whom she has two daughters, Kelsey Laure, 20, and Sonora Ashley, 17.

Last year, Kelly announced she was a lesbian in an interview with SheWired.com. Discussing that interview she said this week, “That was one of those moments when somebody asked me a question, my kids had gone from home, so I really didn’t have to protect anyone by skirting the question, and I just decided to be absolutely honest.”

The couple’s celebration will be featured in the New York Times Vows column on Sept. 26.
