GLAAD is determined to get an apology from The View, saying one of its cohosts perpetuated a “dangerous myth” about HIV in the black community last month. On the June 22 show, guest host DL Hughley blamed “the prevalence of HIV in the African American community” on “young women who are getting it from men who are on the down low”—ie, men who are secretly gay.
Cohost Sherri Shepherd chimed in to explain, “It's so big in the black community with women because they're having sex with men who have been having sex with men.” GLAAD was quick to ask for an on-air correction, since the CDC already disproved that theory. When no apology came, the activist group took out a full-page ad in Variety slamming ABC and The View, E! reports.
