(JESSE on the BRINK) Tasmania!

by Jesse Archer

At the end of the world is Tasmania, and it shows! It's sweepingly vast, wild and desolate. Beautiful. You can drive across it east to west in 5 hours, north to south in 3. With ten days on the island, there was no shortage of scenic views, trail runs, and friendly locals who call the rest of us "mainlanders".

Tasmania was once called Van Diemen's land. And it was the last place a convict wanted to go. Once a notorious penal colony, Port Arthur is now a major heritage site and tourist destination. It's a place that looks so idyllic, but drawn in you discover it's a place of horror... a bit like Ted Bundy's face.

We spent a couple days wandering Port Arthur, learning about various prisoners, hearing stories of escape, of punishment, of how they reformed rogues with "revolutionary" penal practices such as the separate prison, where you were isolated and couldn't speak, see or communicate with anyone, but you were forced to attend church. Apparently, if you reflected upon your sins in silence long enough you would come to see the light. Keep in mind many of the convicts were here chained at the ankles and doing hard labor for having, I kid you not, stolen silverware.

(Jesse on the Brink) Happy 'Straya Day!

 by Jesse Archer

The long weekend was meant to be all wet - and began with a biathlon at Boy Charlton pool. My swim club buddy Drew and I SURVIVED. This easy breezy biathlon is fast becoming a weekly habit.

After that, the weekend raced quickly downhill!

Hit a pool party at my former CEOs, and caught up with loads of friends including gorgeous Andrea.

(JESSE on the BRINK) the Queen of King's Cross!

by Jesse Archer

Here is Gemma. She is always cracked out in the middle of King's Cross, speaking nonsensically, mostly about being an indigenous supermodel and always sporting a revolutionary outfit for the day.

This is the first time I've seen Gemma dressed as a boy. You can't really tell, but she's got a turban under the hat and a sweater for a skirt. The necklaces are amazing and that pile of books? She is not reading them. They are complementary props. Gemma knows how to pull together and rock a look.

(JESSE on the BRINK) Homecoming of The Undoubted Queen!

by Jesse Archer

I just spent five days in Napier, New Zealand - home of art deco, a devastating 1931 earthquake, and my friend Peter Cross.

Peter was a performer and writer (he is an Executive Producer on my film Violet Tendencies, and his short Shopping is now hot on the festival circuit), who had often written of growing up in Napier on his blog. After Peter passed away this past july of cancer, his long-time partner Richard was tasked with bringing him home, and asked me last minute if I would join him on the trip. Not sure if I was asked to be company or comedy...but we had a very memorable journey together.

(JESSE on the BRINK) Up and Close with Mitcham!

It's not every day you get to meet a gold medal Olympian! Australian gold medalist diver Matthew Mitcham had a signing this week for his autobiography "Twists and Turns". He admitted that at 24, he's far too young to have written an autobiography which is why "I fluffed it out with so many photos!" Not that anyone minds...

Not only rare to have met a gold medal Olympian, but an openly gay one at that... is rarely seen in elite sports. I gave Johnny Weir a big kiss for that and also got to thank Matthew Mitcham for his authenticity and openness... qualities which sadly put athletes like him at risk of losing endorsements.

(Mike's MAGIC) Australian Realtor Gets His Properties Hot in a Speedo!

Gray
Australian LGBT site Same Same points us to this video of Australian real estate agent Kieren Gray, who's having some success with a sales technique that's as old as humanity: "This property’s so hot, you’ve got to take your gear off before you get inside."

(JESSE on the BRINK) Is AIRbnb.com the new Rentboy?

by Jesse Archer

"It's realllly shameful," declared my friend XOX. "I feel like a hooker!"

XOX had just been renting out his spare room on Airbnb.com. Airbnb is basically a site that charges for couchsurfing (in 192 countries!). But there are added service opportunities. Read on! The last lodger XOX took for his spare room was an attractive, butch Kiwi dude and one of the advantages of airbnb, as the world gets smaller, is that you get to meet people who are local to the area (it's not a soulless lonely Lost In Translation-like hotel room). So for curious travelers... and for people needing to offset rent or a mortgage...it's a win/win arranged marriage of convenience.
