(MOVIE FREAK) Special OSCAR Preview!

by Sara Michelle Fetters

The 87th annual Academy Awards will be handed out this Sunday evening, and if all goes as expected then director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Broadway comedy-drama hybrid Birdman will likely walk away with the majority of the awards. Based on recent victories with the Producers Guild (PGA), the Directors Guild (DGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), it’s hard to imagine a scenario where it doesn’t emerge victorious, at least as far as Best Picture is concerned, the other seven nominees more or less along for the ride and little else.

Or are they? There are some interesting and intriguing wrinkles which could throw the evening into chaos. Richard Linklater’s 12-years-in-the-making Boyhood has won the majority of the awards up to this point, dominating with critics groups, taking home the BAFTA [British Academy of Film and Television Arts] and coming out on top as far the Golden Globes were concerned. Then there is Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper. With over $300-million in ticket sales it’s easily the box office titan as far as this awards season is concerned. While Hollywood likes to talk about how money isn’t the end all-be all that kind of cash can lead voters to take a second look at the picture, and if that’s the case the chances for it to pull an upset aren’t as extreme as some might think.

As for the remainder of the nominees, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash and Selma, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where any of them could sneak their way to victory. But with the Academy’s preferential voting system, anything, I guess, is possible, and if Birdman and Boyhood split votes down the middle, and any one of those titles is listed third on a majority of ballots, then be prepared for a shock. If this scenario were to come comes to pass, what then? My money would be on quiet, lonely two-nomination Selma, because imagining a typical Academy member ballot where it was listed any lower than third is incredibly difficult to do.

(Behind the Scenes) The Oral History of a 'Gay' Web Series (Part 2)!

by Brad Liberti

Whether you love HBO's groundbreaking millennial hit or simply prefer to hate on it for its deference to conspicuous consumption, there's no denying that Sex and the City was, and still remains, a cultural force to be reckoned with. Like All in the Family, Cheers, and Seinfeld, its influence on episodic ensemble comedy is so expansive that a writer of this stuff would be lying if he or she said the show had no bearing on their work. Leon Acord is not a liar. "An inspiration that I will cop to -- and I hope it doesn't get me sued, because we do get compared to the show a lot -- is Sex and the City."

He reveals, "I remember seeing the Sex and the City movie, and at the end of it, Samantha is turning 50 and decides to break up with her boyfriend and go back to her single life, and I remember watching the movie and having sort of this moment of, like, 'Oh, that's so sad. She's 50 and single.' And then I checked myself before I wrecked myself and went, 'Wait a minute. You're not far from 50. Do you think it's sad?'"

Of course, things were slightly different for the actor/writer, who'd been in a committed relationship for 20-plus years, but as any gay man -- hell, anybody, for that matter -- over 40 and living in Los Angeles will tell you, age can be way more than just a number here. "In San Francisco gays of a certain age are still kind of marginalized, but there is this feeling of, 'They're the elders; they're the history bearers,'" Acord explains. "There is a kind of respect for older gay men that does not exist in L.A. L.A doesn't want to know from history -- gay, straight, or otherwise."

(BEHIND the SCENES) The Oral History of a 'Gay' Web Series (Part 1)!

by Brad Liberti

It's a typically sun-drenched early Sunday afternoon in June the first time we chat. The last of the gloom has burned off -- at least from where I sit, in Hollywood, though he'll tell me that from his front porch (about 12 miles due west), he can still see some scattered grey lingering on its way back to sea.

Leon Acord isn't exactly feeling perky today. No, he's not pulling diva rank because he's the writer, star, producer, and occasional director of his very own wildly successful Web series (Old Dogs & New Tricks, available exclusively on Wolfe Video and at OldDogsNewTricksTheSeries.com). Nor is he kvetching because the show -- which follows the lives of four gay men over the age of 40 trying to navigate life and love in L.A. -- is gearing up to premiere its highly anticipated third season on Nov. 12, and while it most certainly takes a village, the buck ultimately stops with him. The truth of the matter is that he's just a little tired.

(Old Dogs and New Tricks) WeHo Horror Story SPECIAL!

The Boys Celebrate Halloween in 22-Minute ‘Mini-Movie’!

Can sex hound Brad stay celibate? Are unhappily married Ross and Neal headed for gay divorce? Will Muscles discover Bobby’s secret? How can lovelorn Nathan win back Damian?

These questions and more are answered in "WeHo Horror Story," a 22-minute mini-movie event from Old Dogs & New Tricks, the award-winning comedy web series about four middle-aged gay best friends in West Hollywood. .

Set on Halloween in West Hollywood, “WeHo Horror Story” ties up loose ends from the series’ Season 2 cliffhanging finale, and sets the stage for the show's upcoming third season. Look for special appearances by “Barack Obama” and Wonder Woman, plus subtle winks to classic horror films like Halloween, Psycho, Alien and Vertigo.

Directed by John Cleland, “WeHo Horror Story” stars Leon Acord, Curt Bonnem, Jeffrey Patrick Olson, David Pevsner and Amanda Gari, with special guest star Bruce L. Hart. The series is written and was created by Acord.

“Halloween is the gay Christmas,” laughs Acord, “so we couldn’t do a gay series without a Halloween episode! It was originally going to be our third-season premiere, but was just too epic, so we decided to do it as a ‘stand-alone’ special.”

(CLASSIC MOMENTS) 10 Days of BW: Dolly, Lucy and Liz!

My mentor, Barbara Walters is retiring on May 16th and we are counting down 10 of  her best interviews.

Today, Barbara is interviewing Dolly Parton in 1977,on touring, her bus, childhood, figure, Lucy and Gary Morton. IMO:Barbara Walters asks the questions Lucy kinda steered away from up until this point of her career on television (post-I Love Lucy) Some say Lucy was uncomfortable with discussing her past life with her current husband, as she wanted to respect the present joys they had in a successful marriage, and giving it its own identity-It's definately interesting to see Lucy almost go ham on her first marriage and tell the TRUTH of how it was, and why it didnt work. Barbara is wonderful and friendly but asks those GOOD questions you've always wanted to know :) Id love to see an unedited version come out one day, as this is the only known full footage besides that shown on the original air date. At least that I know of. Plus a Fat Liz with her Republican Senator Husband.

Today, Barbara is interviewing Judy Garland shortly after her oldest daughter, Liza Minnelli, married Peter Allen. With Liza out of the nest, the great star is flanked by her younger children Lorna Luft and Joey Luft.

She’s in good form here – clear and charming.

Miss Garland wanted to be a grandmother and was eager to babysit. So sad that two years later she would be dead from an accidental overdose.

In this interview, she denies drug and alcohol abuse and being temperamental: ‘I’m as difficult as a daisy.”
