(OUTscene NW) COVERAGE: Portland's 4th HRC Dinner was Magic!

DLB was an angel       /MKS
by MK Scott

Up until a few years ago, Portland never hosted an Annual HRC Gala. This evening was always celebrated at the Pacific NW Dinner in Seattle, and Portland members came to that one. Now Portland has one and hosted its 4th Annual Gala this past Saturday in the Gardens of Lewis and Clark College. With over 600 attendees, the gala was the place to be on  a Hot summer night. The atmosphere felt like a wedding as attendees wore summer business casual compare to the regular Black tie style.

(MK SCOTT) MK chats with the Director of the FALLS, coming to DVD on December 11th!

Garcia             via Facebook
by MK Scott

One of my TOP Films from this year's Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival was a locally produced film centered around Religion and Forbidden Love. 'The Falls' set in Portland, follows 2 missionaries as they set out to recruit new members for the Mormon Church, as the 2 young men connect to the point that they doubt thier committment to the Religion and Passion takes over and that becomes more important. I had a chance to chat with the director, Jon Garcia, just before the film's December 11th DVD Release.

Darcelle w/ Adams in 2010
By MK Scott

This weekend marks the 82nd Birthday celebration of a NW Icon. Walter Cole, aka Darcelle XV, is a true pioneer and is one of the oldest (still working) female impersators in the country and still owns Darcelle XV club.  As I grew up, Darcelle was always vocal and a true leader of  the community. Walter (as Darcelle) even attended my Aunt's wedding to her partner over 25 yrs ago. Here is my Interview from 2010 for 80th celebration.

(OUTscene AMERICA) Indigo Girls in Symphony on NA Concert Tour!

IndigoGirls420

by Sunny Clark

At the core of Indigo Girls beat the brave hearts of activism. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have always marched to their own drummers, making out the beats of inner wisdom in music, as in life, by championing the rights of society’s marginalized, often playing fundraisers and adding original folk to the lore of too-often martyred victims. Many of us have grown up on Indigo Girl anthems, feeling that much “Closer To Fine,” for having adopted them as our own.
Conducting a career in the public eye with the courage of convictions while earning seven gold records, four of them platinum, and record sales of over 12 million, isn’t the only kind of challenge Indigo Girls embrace. Now touring in support of their 14th studio album, the masterful Beauty Queen Sister the Grammy Award-winning folk/rock duo are also performing select shows with various orchestras around the country. The veteran performers are dedicated to connecting with their audience, so Indigo Girls performing a tour within a tour seems a next step in the marriage of their musical aspirations and level of commitment.

(OUTscene NW) Finding Portland!

Finding Portland was produced, shot, and edited in 51 days during March and April at the invitation of TEDx Portland, where the video was unveiled to a sell out crowd of 650 and met with a standing ovation. Filmed in Portland and the Columbia Gorge, this time-lapse piece offers a new perspective to the City of Roses. From a Portland Timbers season opening soccer game, to the top of the Fremont Bridge, to an aerial shot of Oneonta Gorge, Finding Portland tells the story of a city and its many faces.

Comprised of 308, 829 photographs taken from over 50 unique locations, it took an average of 3.8 hours to make each second of this film. The intent of the project was to place our cameras in unique locations across the city, achieve significant ranges of dynamic camera motion, and pursue cutting edge time-lapse techniques.

(OUTscene NW) PRE-view: Portland's Best in Theater and Music come together ONE Night Only!

Mars
by Mark Wilcox

My wife Heidi and I are producing and hosting a fundraising event downtown on Monday Night October 1st and I am asking personally that you consider joining us if you are available. I really need to starting getting the word out and getting tickets sold, so I need you and your network of contacts! We are bringing the Portland Musical Theater talent together for “best of” show evening – and we have some great performers.

You may not know that Heidi has been involved in musical theatre and singing here in Portland for over 30 years. She has worked with incredible talent and on great productions. We have asked those people to all come together for a night of entertainment in support of the Jackson Hill Wellness Center at the Randall Children’s Hospital (brand new facility on the Emanuel Hospital campus).

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: Portland's LIVE on STAGE production of 'Spring Awakening' is "Totally......AWESOME"!

by MK Scott

Last weekend, I ventured down to Portland to see one my favorite Modern shows directed by a fellow HS Alum, John Oules, Founder and President of LIVE on STAGE.

Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1892 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. It features music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Set in late-19th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany for some time due to its frank portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, while its London production won four Olivier Awards.
