(MATT BAUME WEEKEND) Weekend Brunch: First Celeb Crush, Cosplay, & Gay Religion!

Who was your first celebrity crush? Mine might have been the kid from Free Willy, and oh my goodness wait til you see what he looks like today. Also, check out the fabulous sexy cosplay of this week's Sewers of Paris guest, Aedan Roberts! And I respond to commenters who suggest that we create a gay religion. Not a bad idea.

(MATT BAUME) Anti-Gay Law Would Punish Straight Sex Too!

Well, we're into the primary season, which means the candidates are going to be making lots of crazy promises. But let's talk about one of the worst, a little thing called the "First Amendment Defense Act" that a bunch of the Republican candidates have signed a pledge to pass into law. It is bad news for queer people. And also, it turns out, for straight people.

(Sewers of Paris) Hangout!

It's a Sewers of Paris live video chat! Featuring past guest Brady Ginn an future-guest Aedan Roberts, talking about the entertainment that we love and the strong female characters who inspire us: Bea Arthur; Designing Women; Raja and Ben DeLaCreme from RuPaul's Drag Race; Murder She Wrote; Murphy Brown and Paul Reubens; Buffy; My So-Called Life and Claire Danes; Daria, and so much more.

We also spend some time making fun of my beard. I think I'm ok with that.

(MATT BAUME) Where Have I Been?

Happy New Year! I've neglected my videos recently, but for a good reason -- I've been chugging away on an interview project about queer gamers; and crafting on a holiday episode of Sewers of Paris; and getting my book ready for paperback and audiobook; and maybe also obsessing a bit about Star Wars. I've also been staying in touch with my commenters, who've called me to task for using the word "queer," recommended some excellent gay-gaze episodes of Star Trek, and coalesced opinion around Mary Poppins as Time Lord. Let's talk about all that!

(MATT BAUME WEEKEND) Is Mary Poppins a Witch?

Happy Halloween! I hope you enjoyed an evening of treats and tricks. In this week's feedback we give an important witch her due, examine the occult trappings of a certain practically perfect nanny, address the erasure of male witches, take in some luscious cosplay, and more!

(MATT BAUME) Your Top Halloween Movies!

Happy Halloween! By all means, go out and party. But what if you're a grumpy loner like me and all you want is a nice quiet spooky evening at home? Well, what better way to spend a dark and stormy night than with a creepy, scary, or generally disturbing movie. Last week I asked a bunch of folks on Twitter and Facebook to recommend some of their favorite Halloweeny films, and I get some spooktactular suggestions. I gathered up my favorites, threw away the raisins, and now here are your best bets for a scary film fest.

(MATT BAUME) Drag Queens Shine a Spotlight on their Secret Fears!

I don't like getting scared. But what if fear could also be beautiful, with the help of some dresses and makeup and heels and wigs? I have an article in this week's Stranger profiling three Seattle drag queen monsters who use fright and anxiety and discomfort in a way that you might not be used to seeing: Cucchi Binaca, Amoania, and Arson Nicki.

(MATT BAUME WEEKEND): Feedback: Rocky Horror, Your Favorite Witches, & Adult Toys

Well, I can't say I didn't ask for it: dozens of viewers pointed out the witches I neglected to mention in my previous video. Here are a few of the most popular ones (including Sabrina, the ladies of The Craft, Harry Potter & friends, etc). Plus! Apparently the internet thinks I’m a sewer expert now, and it’s possible that I am. And the story of how I accidentally arranged for Sears to send tweets to a company that makes dragon and werewolf dildos.

(MATT BAUME) Rocky Horror: Give Yourself Over to Absolute Pleasure!

It was literally a dark and stormy night when the Rocky Horror Picture Show taught me to give myself over to pleasure. Like Brad and Janet, I'd been caught in a storm -- a blizzard, not a downpour. But otherwise my night was strangely similar to theirs: I spent it in a mansion. At a party. With a hunky man. And by the time I watched the sun come up in the morning I'd been stripped of nearly everything I'd arrived in.

(MATT BAUME) The Real-Life Gay Panic Behind Nightmare On Elm Street 2!

Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is ostensibly about a murderer invading your dreams, but it actually reflects the real-life torment that the star was going through as a closeted gay actor in the 1980s.

(MATT BAUME) The Queer Power of Witches!

Who's your favorite famous witch? Fun-loving Madame Mim? The Sinister Grand High Witch? It's so hard to pick. And that's the thing about witches: I believe they share a magic, unspoken bond with queer people.

(MATT BAUME) Seinfeld Confronts a Fear About Nothing!

Remember the early 90s? Back then, most Americans believed that homosexuality was morally wrong, then yadda yadda yadda, by the end of the decade those numbers had completely flipped. So how did that happen? Well it was thanks, at least in part, to shows like Seinfeld that effectively broke homophobia.

(MATT BAUME) A Glimpse Behind the Mask of the Furry Community!

Take a first-hand look at Rainfurrest, Seattle's biggest furry convention. What happens when 2,500 people spend a whole weekend imagining they're animals together? Turns out, they learn some surprising things about their own humanity.

(MATT BAUME) LGBT Issues at the First Democratic Debate!

We had had the first of six Democratic presidential debates, and here's what the candidates they had to say about LGBTs:

Well, actually they didn't say anything, probably because at this point they're pretty much all in agreement that everyone deserves the equal protection of the law. Now let's compare that to what the Republicans said at their debate ...

(MATT BAUME) Tusks: The Sensitive Side of Sexy Gay Orcs!

For someone reason, nobody's invented Grindr for orcs yet, but we have the next best thing in Tusks: a dating simulator for big gay green monsters. The game perfectly captures that feeling of being a scary creature, feared by the rest of the world, and then finding your tribe. Even when we feel monstrous, it’s okay when we can be monsters together.

(MATT BAUME) When did Gay Partners Become a Part of the Family on TV?

When did gay partners become a part of the family on TV? October 9, 1977. That's the night CBS aired an All in the Family episode entitled "Cousin Liz," which in just a half hour did three amazing things: it showed America that they could have queer family members. It depicted what may be TV's first gay marriage. And oh yeah it may have changed the course of an election.
