DEBUT! (MY FABULOUS DISEASE) Your Mother Liked It Bareback!

by Mark S. King

Whenever a new study of gay men is released showing that we are having bareback sex, the arbiters of sexual conduct among us clutch their pearls and decry this shameful, shocking, murderous behavior. So you can just imagine runaway pearls showering the floor when a recent survey showed that nearly half the users of the gay phone app Grindr engage in unprotected sex.

I really wish that people would put down their smelling salts and try to understand the reasons why. Instead, every time some half-assed study demonstrates what we already know, they stand there in stunned outrage, frozen in their outdated indignation like they’ve been caught baking bread in Pompeii.

There’s nothing new here, except our seemingly endless fascination with gay men behaving in exactly the same way as nearly every other man on this planet.

(MY View) The Private War That Killed Spencer Cox!

by Mark S. King

My most courageous self, the best man that I'll ever be, lived more than two decades ago during the first years of a horrific plague. ... I miss the man I was forced to become" (Me, in "Once, When We Were Heroes," 2007).

AIDS did not kill Spencer Cox in the first, bloodiest battles of the 1980s. It spared him that.

The reprieve allowed Spencer's brilliance as co-founder of the Treatment Action Group (TAG) to forge new FDA guidelines for drug approval and help make effective HIV medications a reality, saving an untold number of lives.

Such triumph by a man still in his 20s might have signaled even greater achievements ahead. Instead, Spencer found himself adrift in the same personal crisis as many of his contemporaries, who struggled for a meaningful existence after years of combating the most frightening public health crisis of modern times.

(MY view) The Other Side of Forty!

by Robert Levithan

Bob Bergeron committed suicide at 49 -- just before the planned publication of his book, The Right Side of Forty. His suicide note, written on the title page, included this phrase about the book: "It's a lie based on bad information." Perhaps understandably, the publisher cancelled the book's release. So I can't judge the work that Bergeron lost faith in.

Presumably, Bergeron's mission in writing the book was to help spur a healthier outlook on aging for gay men. His disillusionment and suicide send the exact opposite message. However sad his choice might make us, we must not allow it to reinforce an outdated message of hopelessness regarding aging. If aging is a failure, then we all fail.

The colleagues and friends who encouraged me to write about this incident and its implications for gay men hope that I can present an argument that Bergeron was wrong, that both sides of 40 are viable, that as we age, the gains outweigh the losses.

NOW THAT IS HOT: Matt Bomer joins cast of “The Normal Heart” film!

It has taken many, many years for Larry Kramer’s play The Normal Heart to come together as a feature film but finally it is happening with Ryan Murphy as director.
The movie details the rise of HIV/AIDS in New York’s gay community in the 1980s and won a Tony Award last year for best revival of a play.

(Kramer famously slammed Barbra Streisand who held the rights for many years and she has defended herself against his harsh words)

Mark Ruffalo had already been announced in the lead role of Ned Weeks and now comes word that White Collar hunk Matt Bomer will also be in the cast.

Bomer will portray Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Weeks’ boyfriend and contracts the disease. Bomer will be stepping into the shoes that won John Benjamin Hickey a Tony Award last year.

HEALTH ALERT: Boys Should Get HPV Shot, Too!

A CDC committee voted overwhelmingly today to recommend the HPV vaccine for boys as well as girls, reasoning that it will protect them from some cancers of the penis and rectum, while also preventing them from transmitting HPV to the people they sleep with. Twelve panel members voted for the recommendation, with one abstaining, CNN reports.

The committee recommends boys get the shot as early as age 9. The vaccine has been FDA approved for males since 2009, but it hasn’t been marketed toward them. The CDC is making this push now in part because not as many girls are being vaccinated as doctors had hoped. “If the boys are also immunized, it reduces the transmission back and forth,” one CDC adviser explained.

NOT PROTECTED: Contraceptive Shot May Double HIV Risk!

Alarming new research out of eastern and southern Africa, where both unplanned pregnancies and AIDS wreak havoc: The most popular contraceptive used by women there appears to double their risk of contracting HIV—and if a woman already has HIV, it doubles her risk of transmitting it to her partner compared to women who use no contraception. The study centers around a hormone shot given once every three months, which is the best contraception available in Africa today, one expert tells the New York Times: “If it is now proven that these contraceptions are helping spread the AIDS epidemic, we have a major health crisis on our hands.”

The fate posed by unplanned pregnancies is often no better: Hundreds of thousands of African women suffer injuries, bleeding, infection, or death in childbirth. Worse, the study also found that pregnancy itself doubles the risk of contracting or transmitting HIV, meaning women could still face the same increased risk should they decide to stop taking the hormone shot. In light of the study, WHO will meet in January to re-evaluate its contraceptive recommendations. The reason for the increased risk is not clear, though researchers essentially ruled out the possibility that decreased condom use was a factor.
