Truth Wins Out Infiltrates Marcus Bachmann's 'Ex-Gay' Clinic

The mainstream media has finally started reporting on both Michele Bachmann's homophobic policies and husband Marcus Bachmann's dubious clinic, Bachmann & Associates, a counseling service that uses public funds to "cure" people of their homosexuality.

And as people start paying attention to the Bachmanns' anti-gay ways, John M. Becker from Truth Wins Out, a group that counters the "ex-gay" movement, has published an in-depth article about his time undercover at Mr. Bachmann's clinic.

Will Becker's revelations doom Representative Bachmann's presidential campaign?

Michele Bachmann Signs Anti-Gay Pledge That Claims Homosexuality Is A Choice!

Iowa conservatives yesterday asked Republican presidential candidates to sign a pledge that opposes marriage equality, Sharia law and bans pornography. None of those stipulations are that controversial -- not for conservatives, at least.

The document, however, also contends that homosexuality is a choice, rather than a biological trait. I honestly thought, or at least hoped, candidates would be hesitant to back such an inflammatory declaration.

Apparently I was being overly optimistic, because Michele Bachmann, who's married to an "ex-gay" counselor, has already given the pledge her John Hancock.

I sincerely hope that the mainstream media takes her to task on this one, because the "choice" debate is one of the most dangerous and incendiary weapons in the right-wing arsenal, and can be used to justify all sorts of discriminatory measures. If taken to the extreme, it could very well lead to the erection of "reeducation camps," just like the ones Marcus Bachmann runs.

GAYDAR: Twitterverse Titters Over 'Gay' Mr. Bachmann!

Political observers' gaydar is super-piqued by the intriguing Mr. Michele Bachmann, particularly because the therapist is so rabidly anti-gay. "It's pretty much a given that the most vociferously homophobic men are usually repressing something," chortles actor James Urbaniak. "But, oh Mary, Marcus takes the ever-loving cake. I haven't seen flames this high since the last California wildfire." Actor Dave Foley recently asked on Twitter: "How can Michele Bachmann be opposed to gay marriage when she is married to a gay man?"

Marcus Bachmann is a psychotherapist who helps patients stay on the straight-and-narrow via "Christian counseling" informed by "Godly principles" at his Medicaid-supported clinic. He has referred to gays as "barbarians" who "need to be disciplined," and has donated to a group fighting gay marriage. Questions about Bachmann's sexuality bubbled even before Michele declared she's running for president, notes Gawker.

Truth Wins Out posted a video of the mister last year, adding its own snide: "No comment necessary." So does Marcus bashing amount to gay bashing? "As long as the Bachmanns continue to display traits that seem to be at odds with their positions on the issues, they're sure to inspire more ridicule," writes a Wisconsin blogger. "Whether that ridicule is justified or unseemly is a debate within itself."

It's WAR: Cher Takes On Marcus Bachmann!

MSNBC reporter Thomas Roberts yesterday scrutinized Marcus Bachmann, husband of presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, and his claims that gays are "barbarians" who need to be "disciplined."

While it's wonderful to see mainstream media questioning Mr. Bachmann's fundamentalist politics, including his work for the "ex-gay" movement, no amount of cable punditry can compare to the power of long-time LGBT ally Cher, who took to Twitter this week to lambast Marcus Bachmann, and to offer her take on rumors that Michele's husband isn't being straight about his own proclivities.

She also says she wants to "strangle him with my boa." Don't mess with Cher, Mr. Bachmann: the legendary chanteuse takes her gays very seriously. As well she should.

FAILED: How 'Anti-Sissy' Therapy Destroyed a Man and His Family!

Here's the first part of AC360's look into the damaging "anti-sissy" treatment pushed by "ex-gay" proponent Dr. George Alan Rekers

"In 1970, a five-year-old boy named Kirk Murphy was subjected to an ex-gay experiment. Under the care of Dr Ivor Lovaas and George Rekers, then a doctoral student, of UCLA, he underwent therapy to eliminate supposed effeminate behaviors. In 1974, Lovaas and Rekers jointly published a paper about the boy they renamed "Kraig," heralding his treatment for "childhood cross-gender problems" a success and claiming he had been transformed from a gender-confused homosexual-in-waiting to a healthy, heterosexual young man. On the back of this study, Rekers built a career as an anti-gay activist and a supposed expert in childhood sexual development. He co-founded the Family Research Council and championed reparative therapy to turn gay men straight. In 2003, Kirk, aged 38 years old and gay, committed suicide."

Ex-Gay' Organization Exodus International Has an App for That!

"Ex-gay" group Exodus International now has an iPhone app.

Perhaps, the app's description, which is a bit lean at the moment, should also include these tidbits from Truth Wins Out:

"In June 2006, Chambers and Exodus Vice President Director Randy Thomas were guests at the White House to help President George W. Bush in his failed efforts to pass the Federal Marriage Amendment....John Paulk, the organization’ former chairman was photographed in a gay bar in 2000, only three years after he appeared on the cover of Newsweek magazine. Two of Exodus’ married founders, Gary Cooper and Michael Bussee, fell in love in 1978, left the organization and held a commitment ceremony...

ISSUES: CNN Panned for "Ex-gay" Segment

Via Advocate.com:

A CNN segment Tuesday about the effort to repeal a dated California law that encourages the state to study “cures” for homosexuality has outraged activists and bloggers. Watchdogs say the cable news network mishandled the issue when host Kyra Phillips asked whether homosexuality was a “problem” in need of a “cure,” and booked guests including discredited “ex-gay” therapist Richard Cohen. “Homosexuality: Is it a problem in need of a cure? Grabs your attention, doesn’t it?” asked Phillips at the opening of the segment, which appears below.

Critics assailed CNN for giving the idea a national platform.“Instead of discussing the merits of the proposed bill and why ‘finding cures’ for being gay don't work, Phillips and CNN gave credence to this bogus ‘therapy’ and allowed ‘ex-gay activist’ Richard Cohen to spew his lies and promote new research (old studies that have been discredited),” said activist blog Queers United. Also included among the guests was California assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, lead sponsor of the repeal bill. The assembly’s public safety committee approved the bill Tuesday.

The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association found fault primarily with the lack of gay voices in the segment. “While the segment includes balance and Phillips handily challenges Cohen, the bigger problem is that the segment about whether homosexuality can be cured doesn’t feature any actual homosexuals,” wrote Michael Triplett on the organization’s React blog. “While Lowenthal is a worthy representative of the opposition and a wonderful spokeswoman as an ally, it’s always problematic when these kinds of conversations go on without having the people most effected by the legislation — gays and lesbians — represented on the panel.”
