(OUTscene NW) RE-view: Project Red Dress was a Runway Hit!

by Eddie Walker
Outscene NW

Hats off to Eduardo Khawam.  He Directed the 4th Annual Project Red Dress Fashion Show on Feb. 3, 2012 at the Fairmount Olympic Hotel in Seattle, and it was truly a stellar event.  Produced by Monir Zandghoreishi. There was music by Conductor Geoffrey Larson with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra.  Jim Dever hosted the event, and he was charming as ever.  And there was some fashion creations there to die for, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

Project Red Dress is Seattle’s annual fashion event that’s held to raise money for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement.  The designers are local student who are given $200 for red fabric and 16 hours to produce a red dress.  The winner is awarded a scholarship.

The top five dresses were all well made and sellable.  However, they were all dresses I’ve seen before.  But when you think they only had 16 hours to produce these high quality garment from scratch, then I have to give them snaps.  What impressed me was dresses that were different, and me me feel a way I’ve never felt before.
The following are the designers, and my take on their creation.

(OUTscene AMERICA) The Stars come OUT at the LA Gay & Lesbian Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala!

MK was ThisClose to working the Red Carpet of the LA Gay Center's 40th Anniversary Gala Last Night, but had to Rush off and get to the next destination of his West Coast Tour, San      Francisco. Thank God for my Colleague, Greg in Hollywood for getting the Dirt. Also look for Exclusive Photos and Video:

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka were charming couple received the Rand Schrader Distinguished Achievement Award.

“We are so honored to be here on the 40th anniversary of this incredible and important institution,” Harris said before slipping into humor and adding: “It’s hard to believe that it’s been years since The Center first invented gays and lesbians. And we are so happy that they did.”

David, taking on the straight man role if you will, added: “More to the point, we are extraordinarily grateful that we are able to stand here today as a same-sex couple with children and not feel like we are some kind of freak show or some kind of government experiment gone awry.”

Neil then paid tribute to other famous gay parents before them like Dan Savage and Cynthia Nixon, BD Wong, Cat Kora. Ricky Martin, Sara Gilbert, Clay Aiken, Rosie O’Donnell, among others who he described as “courageous people who stood tall long before it became acceptable to do so.”

“The fact is, David and I don’t even consider ourselves true activists. There’s a lot of other people who do that heavy lifting. Sometimes we choose to raise our voices so that the world can hear us but other times we just, frankly, we just want to curl up at home and be a family together.”

Neil pointed out that that is part of the great change The Center has brought about in the last 40 years: “They, and all of you, are helping create a world where, for the first time, for gays and lesbians being married and being a parent doesn’t have to be about making a statement. Instead, it can just be about living our lives.”

(OUTscene AMERICA) The Stars come OUT at the LA Gay & Lesbian Center’s Halloweenie party!

photo

 Via GIH

Fred & Jason’s Halloweenie event at the iconic Hollywood Forever Cemetery has quickly become one of the biggest parties of the year.

I attended for the first time on Friday night (nope, not in costume – I was there to cover the arrivals carpet) and was in awe of the scope of this event which benefits the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.

Thousands of people came – some from as far away as Europe – and enjoyed the sounds from DJs Beau Dasher and Dave Aude.

The arrivals carpet was not as busy as I had hoped with many of the names promised no-shows – at least during the designated 9-11 p.m. arrival time.
